He insists on writing love stories in the least-possibly direct way, which is certainly a gust of fresh air to all of modern lit. Through the use of love letters, one-sided conversations, seemingly-useless lists, mere brush-stroke observations of now-vintage minutiae, conversations with parenteticals attached what the characters are REALLY thinking!
One simply cannot ask for more. Of course it was added to the List inand this gives much cause to rejoice… lost treasure has undoubtedly been re found. View all 12 comments.

The letters are love letters between the protagonists when they were young, followed by letters between one of the women and the mother of her would-be lover following his death from tuberculosis.
These young Argentinians essentially four women and two men, not to mention their parents model their lives and expectations on radio serials and Hollywood romances, much as Madame Bovary was obsessed by romantic fiction When he dies at the very beginning of the novelshe seeks to persuade his mother to return her own letters, so she can keep them together and the tango can continue. Although nothing lasting ever became of their love, the restoration of the correspondence will reinvigorate Nene, her romanticism and her contentment with life, notwithstanding the mediocrity of her marriage.
The exchange of letters is dance-like, a tango, the outcome a heartbreak. The protagonists the women in particular feel as if their thwarted love has become the subject of musical folklore, just as it fuels the engine of this accomplished experimental novel.

Y dudo boquitzs cambiemos pronto. By far my favorite of all Puig’s novels. He’s at his absolute best in utilizing a variety of voices and forms letters real and forged, phone conversations, death notices, prayers, photo albums, police reports to tell the story of Juan Carlos and all the women of Vallejos he was involved with.

Nelida is extremely guilty of this, what with her belief in only being able to truly love one person in life, in her sexual naivete and myopia in terms of Juan Carlos’s philandering.
That’s just how these people think and talk–which isn’t all that different from today’s average wo man-on-the-street. These cliched phrases and situations help the characters see a meaning, a structure to their lives, pkntadas, to be honest, are fairly unhappy, in both domestic suffering silently in a loveless marriage reskmen melodramatic one character murders the father of her child ways. Gossip, or the threat of gossip, is even more important to the lives of the characters than the overwrought movie plots that infect their imaginations.
Everyone’s afraid of what others might know or find out, something that is reflected in the way the reader is forced to piece everything together.
This really is a wonderful book, and I’m not doing it justice in my written-in-five-minutes review. I’m willing to concede that their “new look” is better than what was going on back some years ago, but it’s awfully repetitive and boring, bquitas when it doesn’t work, it really doesn’t work.
Neon yellow around the title?! Hopefully this’ll sell out in the near future and they’ll rethink this crappy design. Jan 07, Sleeping with Ghosts rated it really liked it Shelves: Apr 17, Alejandro Teruel rated it liked it Shelves: Sep 11, Vale rated it liked it.

The story focuses on the romances of three women, two of whom love the same man, an ill-fated Casanova who has tuberculosis. We also get a glimpse of the romance and tribulations of the folks who are the maids and cooks as well, so there is a bit of Upstairs-Downstairs.
We are told in the introduction that, as a flamboyantly gay man, the author was addicted to going to the theatre with his mother from an early age and he imagined himself in the female lead roles. A lively and engaging book by a movie fanatic who transposed cinematic techniques to novels. Tango lyrics lead off each chapter.
This is Argentina, after all. Jan 02, Andrew rated it it was amazing. I lost count of the times I re-read this. I wrote my MA thesis on Puig, which should probably have put me off for life, but of all his novels this is the one I’d go back to again. It’s nostalgic and perhaps even sentimental, but it’s a beautifully written story love and loss.
